Name: Hamlin, Rebecca
Year you started at ISMMS: 2010
Program: MDPhD MTA: MIC
Why you chose ISMMS?
After doing the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) at Mount Sinai, I fully appreciated the supportive learning environment and amazing faculty at the Medical School and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Coupled with being in my favorite city in the world (NYC!), Mount Sinai was the clear choice for doing my MD/PhD studies.
Lab: Dr. Ana Fernandez-Sesma
We are developing an ex vivo human tonsil histoculture system and further optimizing an ex vivo human skin histoculture system for studying dengue virus (DENV) infection in collaboration with Mount Sinai’s Biorepository and Pathology Core Facility. Additionally, we are studying human innate immune responses to wild-type DENV and relevant mutant viruses in these primary human systems as well as in primary human dendritic cells.
Undergrad institution and major: Pomona College, Molecular Biology
What did you do between college and grad school?
After graduation, I traveled for two weeks in Budapest, Prague and Berlin before beginning the MD/PhD program at ISMMS.
What do you like to do outside of school?
I love to travel abroad and experience new cultures and cuisines. NYC is also a wonderful place for this as well!
What is your favorite quote? “To be fond of dancing was a certain step toward falling in love”-Jane Austen
